Half the fun of the travel is the esthetic of lostness.

~Ray Bradbury

I am not much of a country music fan but I have always thought my theme song should be "How can I miss you if you won't go away?" I have in fact spent my life trying to create the freedom that comes only from not staying in one place for too long. But as I sit in the airport and write this --I realize that the real vacation I have taken this week is not to Las Vegas or to the Grand Canyon but the real vacation is from my day to day life and there is nothing so sweet as leaving so you can come back- getting lost so you can find your way anew is the real gift of travel.

What we're really talking about is a wonderful day set aside on the fourth Thursday of November when no one diets.  I mean, why else would they call it Thanksgiving?
~Erma Bombeck, "No One Diets on Thanksgiving,"

Well today I am having soup and salad- but I have had plenty of years with turkey. I hope whatever you eat this thanksgiving you find yourself full of gratitude for whomever provided it.  The planters who planted the seed and the feeders who fed the turkeys, the harvesters and truck drivers and store owners and clerks.  Not to mention whoever went to the store and whoever cooked the meal and whoever is cleaning up.  Much work goes into thanksgiving and may we never ever forget to be grateful for all of the bounty we receive.

“Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona. Not all holes, or games, are created equal.”                  -George F. Will

In a bet there is a fool and a thief.  ~Proverb

I am spending a few days in Las Vegas. To be quite frank I never thought I would be here but I am spending thanksgiving with friends who live in Vegas and so here I am.  I have always thought that gambling was a sure way to waste time and money and today after spending 6 hours on the strip, after walking from New York to Paris in a matter of seconds and even after wining $248 my mind hasn’t changed. But after having so much fun I am wondering what harm there is in wasting a bit of time now and then.  Maybe the point (as in all things) is to find a balance.  Tomorrow I am off to the Grand Canyon.
